The world of Supernatural will expand with The Winchesters, a new prequel series following Sam and Dean’s parents in the years before the Winchester brothers were born. Jensen Ackles, who played Dean Winchester in the show, is executive producing the prequel alongside his wife Danneel Ackles. He will also return to voice Dean as the show’s narrator, though there’s no indication Jared Padalecki will be back as Sam in any capacity for the Supernatural prequel.

“After Supernatural wrapped its 15th season, we knew it wasn’t over. Because, like we say in the show, ‘nothing ever really ends, does it?’” Jensen Ackles said in a statement via Deadline. “When Danneel and I formed Chaos Machine Productions, we knew the first story we wanted to tell was the story of John and Mary Winchester, or rather the Supernatural origin story. I always felt like my character, Dean, would have wanted to know more about his parent’s relationship and how it came to be. So I love the thought of having him take us on this journey.”

The logline for the Supernatural prequel: “Before Sam and Dean, there was John and Mary. Told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles), The Winchesters is the epic, untold love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love but the entire world.”

At this time, The Winchesters has a script commitment, but it remains to be seen if The CW will ultimately move forward with the series. Given the popularity of Supernatural coupled with the return of Ackles, it seems more likely than not that people will be interested. In the meantime, fans of Ackles can look forward to his debut as Soldier Boy in the third season of The Boys on Amazon Prime Video.
