day of the dead series trailer
SYFY

After being announced in February 2020, SYFY has finally released a trailer for its 10-episode series Day of the Dead. Based on George A. Romero’s hit 1985 zombie film of the same name, Day is the third film in the Dead series, following Night of the Living Dead (1968) and Dawn of the Dead (1978).

The new SYFY series is created by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, the writing duo behind The Banana Splits Movie and R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour. Three different directors will helm the series: Jem Garrard (TV’s Wynonna Earp), Jacquie Gould (TV’s Van Helsing), and practical effects guru Steven Kostanski (Psycho Goreman, The Void).

The series will premiere this October on SYFY and will star Keenan Tracey (Polaroid), Daniel Doheny (The Package), Natalie Malaika (The Sinners), Morgan Holmstrom (I Still See You), Mike Dopud (The Predator), and Christopher Russell (Land of the Dead).

The series will not be a sequel or remake but seemingly more of a retelling, following a group of strangers as they maneuver through the first 24 hours of a zombie apocalypse.

At the Comic-Con@Home 2021 show panel, co-creator Scott Thomas said, “Every time zombies come up, we talk about Romero, he established what we know as the modern zombie now in Night of the Living Dead and then in Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead, and everything else. He did it in a way that also added social commentary; it spoke to the times these movies were made. Every single zombie movie or TV show or graphic novel owes Romero for his legacy.”

It’s unknown whether the new Day of the Dead series will follow a more modern take on the social commentary George A. Romero highlighted in his films. Still, if the trailer is any indication, the special effects and zombie makeup will be excellent.

SYFY has recently started to dip into the horror series pool a little more, with the success of Channel Zero and the highly anticipated upcoming series Chucky.

Let’s hope for another success with Day of the Dead!
