Bub might be heading to the small screen, as the Syfy network has ordered a 10-episode TV series adaptation of the 1985 zombie movie Day of the Dead. Directed by George A. Romero, the original film is considered by many horror fans to be among the very best zombie movies of all time, highly revered along with Romero’s other classics like Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead.
Now, it appears Syfy is hoping that fandom will carry over into a new TV show adaptation, as Deadline reports the network has officially ordered ten episodes worth of a Day of the Dead series. Written by showrunners Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, the Day of the Dead series will tell the intense story of “six strangers trying to survive the first 24 hours of an undead invasion.” It’s not yet clear how much of the plot elements from the film will be borrowed for the series or if we’ll see a new version of the “smart” zombie, Bub. The project is expected to air sometime in 2021.
This news follows the confirmation that Syfy will be bringing Chucky from the Child’s Play franchise to the network for his own Chucky TV series. Jennifer Tilly has since teased her return as Chucky’s bride, Tiffany, and several other fan favorites are expected to appear. As a sequel series, this pitch seems to be well-received by Chucky fans hoping to see more from the original Child’s Play timeline. People are mostly much more leery about remakes or reimaginings, so launching a new Day of the Dead series seems a little more risky.
Synopsis: Trapped in a missile silo, a small team of scientists, civilians and trigger-happy soldiers battle desperately to ensure the survival of the human race, but tension inside the base is reaching breaking-point, and the zombies are gathering outside.
