It’s been revealed that Nicolas Cage has been cast as the iconic vampire king Dracula in Universal Pictures’ upcoming film Renfield. The film will focus on Dracula’s henchman, the insect-munching R.M. Renfield, who will be portrayed by Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men: First Class).
In the original story, Renfield was an inmate at an insane asylum, who became the full-time servant of Count Dracula, helping him with his every-day tasks and finding his victims. Dwight Frye portrayed the classic character similarly to the book in the original 1931 Dracula. At this time, no announcements have been made regarding the direction that filmmaker Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War), and writers Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) and Ryan Ridley (Rick and Morty) are going to take Renfield, though it appears this film will be more modernized.

Nic Cage, who hasn’t been in a vampiric role since his hilariously cheesy outing in Vampire’s Kiss (1989), should be a perfect fit for the overly dramatic bloodsucker. Thought to have fallen off in acting quality with a decade of mostly straight-to-video roles, Cage made a full resurgence and has put out some truly great performances in the last years, including Mandy, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Pig.
No release date has been announced, but we’re guessing Renfield will be released in late 2022 or early 2023. This news was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
