Christina Ricci as Wednesday in The Addams Family
Paramount Pictures

Wednesday will have The Addams Family fans much more excited with the latest addition to its cast. Deadline first reported (and now Netflix has confirmed) that the upcoming series, in the works at Netflix with Tim Burton directing, has recruited Christina Ricci to play a major role in the show.

She joins the cast alongside lead star Jenna Ortega, who was previously announced as the new Wednesday Addams.

Details haven’t been divulged about Ricci’s character, but she has been brought in as a series regular after original actress Thora Birch left the series partway through production. Don’t start speculating that Ricci could be playing an older version of Wednesday alongside Ortega, perhaps in a manner similar to Kim Cattrall and Hilary Duff on How I Met Your Father. She is said to be playing an original character.

Wednesday fast-forwards the story by several years, imaging Wednesday Addams after she heads out of the family’s kooky mansion and into Nevermore Academy. Given the change in setting, we can still expect to see the other family members popping up, though they won’t be the main characters.

The series will be a coming-of-age supernatural mystery comedy focusing on Wednesday Addams. It will focus on her years as a high school student at Nevermore Academy, where she attempts to master her psychic powers, stop a monstrous killing spree of the town citizens, and solve the supernatural mystery that affected her family 25 years ago—all while navigating her new relationships.

Wednesday is directed by Tim Burton and written by Al Gough and Miles Millar (Supernatural). The series stars Jenna Ortega, Christina Ricci, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzman, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Hunter Doohan, Georgie Farmer, Moosa Mostafa, Emma Myers, Naomi J. Ogawa, Joy Sunday, Percy Hynes White, Gwendoline Christie, and Victor Dorobantu.

Wednesday doesn’t have a release date at this time.
