Strewn throughout PlayStation’s State of Play were looks at various indie games coming to the platform in the future. As indie games are some of our favorite types of games, here are some we wanted to highlight.
Announced a few years ago, Stray is a game that’s been on the radar ever since. The newest game from Annapurna, developed by BlueTwelve Studio, puts players in the shoes — er, paws — of a cat exploring a deteriorating, cyberpunk world. As the cat protagonist, the player will be tasked with solving puzzles and traversing this dank and dystopian world, maybe uncovering why exactly things are the way they are.
Per the trailer, humans seem to be scarce as most of the characters we encounter are machines with friendly faces. Although cute, the game is not without its dangers. With the help of a friendly drone, B-12, you’ll have to fight off the ratlike enemies threatening your very existence. Also, it looks like there’s a ‘meow’ button. We’re sold. Stray hits PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on July 19, 2022, and will be free to play for PS Plus Extra members.
Rollerdrome is an upcoming game that takes the peaceful sport of roller derby and turns it into an absolute bloodbath. The key to Rollerdrome is always be moving. You stop, you die. Out of ammo? No problem, hit some gnarly tricks to fill those clips. It’s all about the weapons.
You start with dual pistols, but as you get further into the game, you’ll unlock weapons like the grenade launcher and Z-11 Energy Rifle. To get good, you’ll have to master all the facets of the sport, such as dodging, killing, aiming, combos, and of course, SUPER REFLEX MODE. Build enough adrenaline, and Super Reflex mode will allow you momentary slow-motion bliss as well as a 1.5x score multiplier. If you’re excited about anything just said, gear up for Rollerdrome when it launches on August 16, 2022, on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
Eternights is part hack and slash, part dating-sim. Our first look at Eternights starts with an arm being severed, spewing blood everywhere before morphing into a big blade. According to a post on the PlayStation Blog, Eternights consists of supply hunts, dungeon crawling, and going on dates. Studio Sai founder Jae Yoo writes: “When you’re not exploring dungeons, you can choose to spend time growing closer to a cast of five quirky and loveable characters. As you explore their stories and grow closer to them, you also unlock unique skills and spells you can use in battle.”
The game will feature an intense scheduling mechanic that will urge you to balance your time properly between fighting demons and dating. You can focus on a single element of the game or multiple. It’s up to you. Eternights launches next year on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

Finally, Tunic. The game came to Xbox Game Pass not too long ago, and it’s so good. It’s a beautiful game inspired by the Legend of Zelda franchise, so fans of that will want to check out Tunic for sure. Luckily for Sony fans, Tunic is heading to PlayStation 5 on September 27. 2022!
