Ever since I saw Streets of Vengeance (2016), there has been a mild obsession with the film, the soundtrack, and other films produced by A&P Productions. They have a sensibility I really enjoy, taking inspiration from classic ’80s B-movies and delivering them to modern audiences. They’re not the only ones doing it, but they’re certainly resting at the top of the heap.
A&P is Angie De Alba and Paul Ragsdale. This couple has been forging their own path since 2013 with their debut feature Cinco De Mayo. That was followed by the aforementioned Vengeance and, most recently, Slashlorette Party (2020).
For the past several weeks, De Alba and Ragsdale have been throwing out teases about what their next project will be, and for fans of the whole retro ’80s revival, this project will certainly grab your immediate attention. Just take a look at this wonderful title and let your imagination take over: Murdercise.
Really, who doesn’t remember the aerobics craze of that particular time period with the big hair, spandex, leg warmers, and great music? Not to mention the film Killer Workout (1987), which is a staple to cult film fans, and the insanely fun Linnea Quigley’s Horror Workout (1990). All these elements, combined with the duo’s previous track record, something tells me this film is going to be something special.
From IMDB, the plot summary goes like this, “Phoebe is an obsessed fitness nerd who gets her big break on a sleazy workout video. After being ridiculed by her co-stars, Phoebe befriends a mafia princess wild child, who teaches her how to murder her way to the top.”
If that description doesn’t grab you, then maybe the casting will. It’s loaded with some of indie film’s most talented and attractive women, including Jordan Phipps (Close Calls), Nina Lanee Kent (Slashlorette Party), Jessa Flux (Space Babes from Outer Space), and many more. The film also features Drew Marvick (Pool Party Massacre) and the recently announced (and living legend) Ginger Lynn Allen (The Devil’s Rejects).
Casting news is still coming, with names being thrown out with new announcements.
On July 1st, De Alba and Ragsdale launched an IndieGoGo campaign to raise funding for the film. It’s off to a strong start and will run throughout the month of July. It’s a bit of a tough time for everyone with the current state of affairs all over the world, but if you’re going to support any project this year, I would urge you to help bring Murdercise to the screen.
Some excellent perks include Blu-ray and VHS copies of the finished film, an IMDB credit, and even your own cameo appearance. I’m not affiliated with this film in any way, but I certainly will show my support for the filmmakers. They’re the real deal. Take a look at the campaign and see what you think. Donate if you should feel so inclined, and let’s try to keep the ’80s alive.
