The Gremlins animated prequel series, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, made new casting announcements during SDCC 2022, much to the delight of fans.
Actor Zach Galligan, who played the main role of Billy Peltzer in Joe Dante’s Gremlins (1984) and the sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990), is back. Since this is a prequel series taking place in the 1920s, Galligan will not play Billy Peltzer, however, no details about his role have been disclosed.
Also joining the cast of Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai are Ming-Na Wen (The Book of Boba Fett, The Mandalorian) as Fong Wing, James Hong (Everything Everywhere All at Once, Star Wars: Visions) as Grandpa, Izaac Wang (Clifford the Big Red Dog, Raya and the Last Dragon) as Sam Wing, B. D. Wong (Jurassic franchise, Mr. Robot) as Hon Wing, Matthew Rhys (The Americans, Brothers & Sisters) as Riley Greene, A. J. Locascio (The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special, Jurassic World video game series) as Gizmo, Gabrielle Nevaeh Green (All That, That Girl Lay Lay) as Elle, and Zach Galligan.
The show’s announced guest stars will be Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy, Killing Eve), Randall Park (Fresh Off the Boat, WandaVision), George Takei (Star Trek, Hit-Monkey), and Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live, Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens).

The official synopsis reads:
Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai travels back to 1920s Shanghai to reveal the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing (future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 movie) met the young mogwai called Gizmo.
Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil gremlins.
A 10-episode run of Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai will premiere on HBO Max in 2023.
