Daryl Dixon in The Walking Dead

New details have been revealed about the upcoming Walking Dead spinoff series featuring Norman Reedus as Daryl Dixon. While fans are getting ready to say goodbye to The Walking Dead after eleven seasons, the franchise will continue to live on through its many spinoffs. The Daryl-led spinoff was originally conceived as a show following both Daryl and Carol Peletier. However, those plans changed when Melissa McBride backed out of the project, unable to relocate to the show’s European shooting location.

On Talking Dead: The Walking Dead Universe Preview 2022 (via GamesRadar), it was revealed that the untitled Daryl spinoff will be set in France. The show ties into a post-credit sequence featured at the end of the limited series The Walking Dead: World Beyond, which had a French doctor listening to the transmissions put out by Dr. Jenner at the CDC in season 1 of The Walking Dead. The scene mentions fast-moving “variant” zombies that pose a much bigger threat to survivors, and Daryl will be fighting them in his upcoming spinoff.

“[It] is a bit of a tease of some of the things Daryl is going to face,” franchise mainstay Scott M. Gimple stated.

It remains to be seen exactly how Daryl manages to get all the way over to France, but with the spinoff’s location established, it seems probable that all could be explained in the series finale of The Walking Dead. As helicopters and other aircraft are still around in this world, it’s not too farfetched for Daryl to find a ride, but why would he specifically head to France?

Meanwhile, other survivors will be dealing with different issues elsewhere in this world. Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan are leading a separate spinoff series dubbed Isle of the Dead, following Negan and Maggie as they head to New York. The anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead will also be telling more stories in the Walking Dead universe. The main show is ending but the franchise isn’t going anywhere.
