On June 4, 2022, the 1982 classic supernatural/haunted house film Poltergeist celebrated its 40th anniversary with fans taking to social media to share childhood memories and scares. Now, the film which was written by Steven Spielberg and directed by Tobe Hooper (although this has long been debated among fans) will be released on Ultra HD Blu-ray Combo Pack at $24.99 and on Digital on September 20, 2022.

With a screenplay written by Spielberg, Michael Grais, and Mark Victor, from a story by Spielberg, the film was produced by Frank Marshall and Spielberg. Poltergeist stars JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson, Zelda Rubinstein, Beatrice Straight, and Heather O’Rourke. The story follows all-American suburbanites Steve (Nelson) and Diane (Williams) suddenly experience paranormal activity in their home. What starts off as minor excitement quickly turns into nasty ghostly encounters. The disappearance of their daughter Carol Anne (O’Rourke) forces the Freelings to bring in parapsychologists and a professional exorcist to exorcise their home.

The film features Oscar-nominated Visual Effects by Richard Edlund, Michael Wood, and Bruce Nicholson. Although rated PG at the time of its release, there is no doubt the practical FX and scares would push the film into a PG-13 rating today. The film was remade in 2015 by Monster House director Gil Kenan and followed the same story, with a few changes, although the remake was not as well-received by fans.
