One of the horror book genre’s biggest sleeper hits of 2020 is getting a film adaptation, as Adam Cesare’s Clown in a Cornfield has been picked up by Temple Hill Entertainment, per Deadline. Most recently, Temple Hill Entertainment is responsible for taking Smile, one of 2022’s most beloved horror movies, and turning its 17-million-dollar budget into a whopping 216-million-dollar success.

Cesare’s young adult-focused horror adaptation will be directed by Eli Craig, the director behind Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, one of the more popular horror comedies released in the last decade, and Little Evil, a Netflix original horror-comedy starring Adam Scott and Evangeline Lily. The screenplay will be helmed by Carter Blanchard, who wrote the screenplay for Independence Day: Resurgence.

Though Craig typically dabbles in comedy-horror, Temple Hill Entertainment felt that he was perfect for the job, and released this in a statement, “We love Eli Craig’s brand of scary fun and are thrilled to be working with him on this terrifying slasher adaptation that is both timely and timeless.”

Cesare’s popular novel has garnered attention from big names in the horror genre, including filmmaker and writer Clive Barker, and Cesare won the Bram Stoker Award in 2020 for best young adult novel. The book received such grand and immediate attention, that HarperCollins Publishers greenlit a sequel in 2021. Cesare released Clown in a Cornfield 2: Friendo Lives on August 25th, 2022.
