Blumhouse and Atomic Monster’s M3GAN is getting a sequel after a truly impressive box-office debut, as reported by Deadline. The killer AI doll has earned $45.7 million worldwide since its theatrical release on January 6th. With stiff competition from Avatar: The Way of Water and a release date after the new year, which can be difficult for horror films, this is great news for the genre.
M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a lifelike doll that’s programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by Gemma, a brilliant roboticist, M3GAN can listen, watch and learn as it plays the role of friend and teacher, playmate, and protector. When Gemma becomes the unexpected caretaker of her 8-year-old niece, she decides to give the girl an M3GAN prototype, a decision that leads to unimaginable consequences.
On social media, moviegoers have blasted streaming services and studios for failing to promote their content, resulting in disappointing box office numbers and series cancellations. The success of films such as Smile and M3GAN demonstrates how effective marketing can be. Both films had viral videos, public appearances, and a lot of hype by the time they were released. It also drew younger audiences looking for good scares.

In a statement to Deadline, Jason Blum said, “Everyone has been saying that we’ve lost the under-25 crowd. M3GAN is a clear indication that we have not. If you make the right movie and make it the right way, the audience is there. The audience is starved for a fun, entertaining movie. There’s not enough.”
M3GAN is currently on the big screen. Although not confirmed, the film is expected to be available on the Peacock streaming service by the end of February.
