Horror fans have long wanted to see Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving adapted for the big screen, and it is finally happening.

Thanksgiving first appeared in Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 film Grindhouse as one of the fake movie trailers shown between segments. Other trailers included Rodriguez’s Machete, which was released in 2010 as a feature film starring Danny Trejo, Rob Zombie’s Werewolf Women of the SS, Edgar Wright’s Don’t, and Jason Eisener, John Davies, and Rob Cotterill’s Hobo with a Shotgun, which was also made into a feature film in 2011. Thanksgiving will be the third trailer to get a full-length movie.

Deadline reports that Deadpool director Tim Miller has stepped in to handle reshoots for the upcoming Borderlands adaptation. As a result, some speculated that Roth had been removed from the project. The director, however, is still very much involved with Borderlands. Miller is filling in for Roth for two weeks of reshoots while the latter works on Thanksgiving.

Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving is a holiday-themed slasher with a Pilgrim as the killer (played in the trailer by Jeff Rendell). It is set in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where the town goes all out for the holiday, complete with a parade. The bloodshed begins during the event when the Pilgrim decapitates a turkey mascot in front of horrified onlookers. Perhaps the most memorable scene in the trailer involves a cheerleader, a trampoline, and a brutally placed knife. The trailer also featured Jordan Ladd, Jay Hernandez, and Michael Biehn, in addition to Roth and Rendell.

Borderlands is based on Gearbox Software and 2K’s popular video game franchise of the same name. With a screenplay by Roth and Craig Mazin, it will star Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland, Jack Black as Claptrap, and Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Patricia Tannis. The adaptation is expected to be released this year, but no specific date has been set.
