Kevin Williamson Calls ‘Scream VI’ “A Fresh Reinvention”

Paramount Pictures

The upcoming sixth installment in the beloved Scream franchise is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the duo behind the hit 2019 horror-comedy, Ready or Not, as well as Scream (2022), the fifth entry. The newest showdown with Ghostface is set to come out this year and will pick up directly where the last one left off, but this time, moving across the country to the Big Apple.

The actors that played the surviving characters will be returning for Scream VI, including Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, and Courtney Cox. In a surprise addition announced earlier last year, and teased in the fifth movie, Hayden Panettiere will be reprising her role as Kirby Reed, a fan-favorite from Scream IV.

A few noteworthy newcomers will be joining the franchise as well, including Josh Segarra (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law), Tony Revolori (MCU Spider-Man Trilogy), and a horror staple in her own right, Samara Weaving. Weaving previously worked with Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett as the lead in Ready or Not.

Unfortunately, Neve Campbell turned down her return to the Scream franchise because her financial expectations were not met; a disappointing turn that’s starting to look less like a red herring, and more like a reality.

Kevin Williamson, the writer of three films in the Scream franchise (Scream, Scream 2, and Scream IV), I Know What You Did Last Summer, and The Faculty weighed in his opinions on the highly anticipated upcoming film, Scream VI.

Williamson told Syfy Wire in an interview:

“Absolutely floored with how well Scream VI turned out. It doesn’t feel like Part 6; it feels like you’re watching this big, huge, fresh reinvention. I love, love, love, love it. I’ve watched the movie with a big smile on my face. I think it’s everything and more. And going to New York is awesome. The movie feels new, it feels fresh, it feels like a new movie.”

That is massive praise coming from the guy who was inspired by the real-life murders of the Gainesville Ripper, and mixed with Craven’s meta ideas, turned that inspiration into one of the biggest franchises in horror history. Williamson returned as a producer to the newest Scream release.

Williamson continued his praise:

“I love Scream VI. It’s really good. It’s great. There’s no way around it. I’m very happy with how it turned out… I really do have all the enthusiasm for it. I’m really excited.”

Scream VI is set to release on March 10th, 2023, in theaters everywhere.
