Limited Run Games is bringing back Maniac Mansion with a new re-release of the classic point-and-click adventure game. Inspired by horror films of the 1980s, Maniac Mansion tells the story of a slimy meteor who lands on Earth and takes control of the mind of a mad scientist, Dr. Fred Edison. When Dr. Fred kidnaps local cheerleader Sandy, it’s up to her boyfriend Dave and his pals to rescue her from the Edison mansion, avoiding volatile family members, tentacles, and other hazards along the way.
As of now, pre-orders are now open for the re-release of the video game. This new release includes an NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) version that comes complete in the box with an instruction manual, though the premium edition comes with other rad bonuses. There’s a PC version that similarly comes with its bonuses. Big fans wanting both versions can pick up the Fan Bundle.
Some of the bonuses that the different versions share include a double-sided poster, an official soundtrack, a logo patch, and an exploded hamster pin. The PC version comes with its own exclusive poster and codebook reminiscent of its original PC release, along with a Dead Cousin Ted sarcophagus USB stick containing the game. The NES version also has its own differently-colored poster, an NES game cart keychain, and, of course, the game on the NES cartridge with a game box.

Published by Lucasfilm Games, Maniac Mansion was designed by Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick. Gilbert also programmed with David Fox and Carl Mey. The game has been credited as the first video game to introduce cut scenes. It has also been instrumental in changing adventure games by having players point and click with the items they wanted their characters to interact with rather than having to type in these actions in previous adventure games.
