ET Game Movie - Atari Game

The next classic movie to get the reboot treatment in Hollywood is 1982’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Directed by Steven Spielberg and considered by many to be among the best movies of all time, E.T. has never been rebooted or even given an official movie sequel up to this point. In previous years, Spielberg had been against the idea of revisiting the classic, but he now says that the recent success of video game adaptations, as we just saw with The Last of Us on HBO, made him reconsider that stance.

According to Spielberg, what E.T. needs to shine again with a new film is to take direct inspiration from its video game adaptation. The filmmaker has officially announced his plans to direct and produce E.T.: The Game: The Movie, which will reimagine the plot to better coincide with the Atari game released back in 1982. The Oscar-winning director says he believes this version will exceed not only the box office profits of the original, but the critical acclaim as well.

“Granted, I haven’t played the game personally, but I know just how much people like video games,” Spielberg said in a new interview for the Horror Geek Life podcast, noting how films like Sonic the Hedgehog and Mortal Kombat have been very successful.

The game’s greatest moments will be reimagined in live-action

Spielberg divulges that there won’t be a lot of dialogue or plot elements in E.T.: The Game: The Movie, as the majority of the film is spent following the extra-terrestrial wandering around alone, trying to figure out what he’s supposed to do. He frequently falls down into deep pits that are randomly placed throughout the town, and he can only get out by extending his neck to levitate out of the hole. However, most often, he ends up falling right back down directly into the pit.

“Around 90% of the film is E.T. falling into — and trying to get out of — these deep, dark holes in the ground,” Spielberg admits.

You might have surmised at this point in the story that the E.T. reboot is not actually happening. Everything in this story is completely made up as part of our April Fools’ Day shenanigans for this year. Happy April Fools’ Day!
