The world of low-budget action films is finally beginning to get the love it deserves. Companies specializing in the genre, like Cannon Films, Imperial Entertainment, PM Entertainment, and more, are seeing their films being embraced in the media or with special edition physical media releases. Vinegar Syndrome has recently been going all out with their releases of movies from Don “The Dragon” Wilson and Cynthia Rothrock. Several years back, they released the 1994 picture, LA Wars, in a limited special edition, and it has been going for close to $100 on eBay since it’s now out of print. Thanks to the MVD Rewind Collection, the cult classic is now back in print.
Raul Guzman (Rodrigo Obregon) is one of the most notorious drug lords in Los Angeles. He makes a bold move by trying to interfere with mob boss Carlo Giovani (A.J. Stephans) and his cocaine business. Undercover cop Jake Quinn (Vince Murdocco) goes undercover as a bodyguard for Giovani’s daughter Carla (Mary E. Zilba). Guzman is ready to do what it takes to overthrow Giovani, including going after his daughter. To make matters worse, Giovanni’s guy Vinny also goes after Carla, though Quinn is there to save her. With Vinny tossed from the family, he teams up with Guzman, ready to start a war on the streets of L.A., and Quinn is the only one who can stop them.
LA Wars follows the formula most low-budget action films use and does so in its own special way. I’ve been a longtime fan of Vince Murdocco, who delivers the same energy he possessed in films like Kickboxer 2, Ring of Fire, Flesh Gordon Meets the Cosmic Cheerleaders, and several others. It was also delightful seeing Rodrigo Obregon, who may be best known for his work with Andy Sidaris, appearing in nine of the late director’s Lethal Ladies films. There are more than enough shootouts, fights, and explosions to keep things interesting for ninety minutes. Do you really need anything else?

This release from MVD mirrors the Vinegar Syndrome release, sharing many of the same special features, minus a couple of audio interviews. This one does have an all-new commentary with producer, co-writer, and co-director Tony Kandah, moderated by Cereal at Midnight host Heath Holland. It has its own slipcover, collectible mini poster, and reversible artwork. If you missed out on L.A. Wars the first time around, now’s your chance, especially since there’s a much better price point with this release.
LA Wars is an absolute blast, with tons of action and a fun cast. And to be clear, I never laughed at the movie; I laughed with it. I have nothing but respect for those involved and to see it getting a second life.
