Almost a decade after its release, a sequel has been announced for the hit horror film It Follows.

First dropping in 2014, It Follows was directed by David Robert Mitchell and starred Maika Monroe. Per Variety, it’s been revealed that the two will be reunite for They Follow, a new film that will serve as a direct sequel to It Follows. Mitchell is also producing with Jake Weiner and Chris Bender alongside It Follows producers David Kaplan, Erik Rommesmo, Rebecca Green, and Laura Smith. Neon, which will be co-producing the movie with Good Fear Content, also shared the first teaser poster for They Follow on social media, revealing its logo along with the tagline, “It’s Everywhere.”

It Follows was written and directed by Mitchell. It starred Monroe as a woman pursued by a mysterious, supernatural force after an intimate night with her new boyfriend. AT the time of its release, the film drew high praise from critics and horror fans, appreciated for its unique premise that made it unlike other genre movies. It holds an astonishing 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is especially high for a horror film. It was also a success financially, surpassing $23 million at the box office with a budget of around $1.3 million.

Horror movies can often be quick to put sequels into development after finding great success, but it’s taken nearly ten years for They Follow to come to fruition. That wasn’t due to a lack of interest. Back in 2015, distributor Radius-TWC co-president Tom Quinn told Deadline that the film had exceeded their goals, and at that point, the “ultimate goal” was to “see [a] sequel.” While that didn’t happen for Radius-TWC, Neon has stepped in to finally make part two a reality.

“I don’t know that a sequel would be the next thing that I would do, but I’m certainly open to it,” Mitchell also told Vulture in 2015. “I just kinda want to see how things play out. But I do want to say that when I wrote this, I had some bigger set pieces, a few things that I sort of simplified, and some stuff that we chose to cut out because of the budget and time, so there’s all kinds of fun things that could be done with this concept and story.”

A release date hasn’t yet been set for They Follow, but the sequel is reportedly set to start filming in early 2024. Meanwhile, the first film is currently streaming on Netflix.
