There’s only one way Zack Snyder’s SnyderVerse could continue.

With his Henry Cavill-led Superman movie Man of Steel, director Zack Snyder officially launched what would become known as the “SnyderVerse” in 2013. That world started to branch out into the DCEU when Snyder left Justice League during production, leaving it to Joss Whedon to make big changes and release a cut far different from what Snyder had envisioned.

That led to a popular fan campaign to “release the Snyder Cut,” which was ultimately successful. Snyder has no plans to make any more DC films, but speaking with CultraOcio, the filmmaker revealed he’d go back to the Snyderverse without hesitation, but only if Netflix had the rights.

“If Netflix had owned the rights to the DC characters in my extended universe, of course, I would, absolutely. Yeah, no question,” Snyder said.

Snyder also commented on “superhero fatigue,” which could be a factor in the decline of the genre’s recent box office performances. The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice helmer said that it’s natural to an extent for audiences to grow weary of these kinds of movies after they’ve been coming out consistently for so long. At the same time, Snyder believes the genre isn’t finished but filmmakers need to do what they can to surprise audiences moving forward.

“We’ve been watching superhero movies every weekend for 15 years or something like that,” Snyder said. “So, it’s not outrageous that the graph is going to fluctuate, you know? I don’t think by any means that the superhero movie is completely done, but do I feel like there’s an onus on the filmmakers and the people who are the guardians on this IP to be sure that they are bringing audiences the highest quality material they can, because audiences are very sophisticated. They know the stories now. Now, you need to surprise them again.”

Meanwhile, Snyder is focusing on Rebel Moon, the sci-fi epic he’s been working on for Netflix. Snyder has praised the streamer for how much freedom they’ve given him with his projects, so that likely plays a big part in why he’d have no issues making more superhero movies for Netflix if that were possible.

In any case, he’s got more big plans for turning Rebel Moon into a massive franchise, so he’ll likely be spending a lot of time in that universe for the foreseeable future. Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire will premiere on Netflix on Dec. 22, 2023.
