Jamie Kennedy will return for Scream 7: Afterlife.

In the original Scream movie, Jamie Kennedy made his franchise debut in the fan-favorite role of Randy Meeks. The character was killed off in Scream 2, and Kennedy did not appear in the legacy sequels (2022’s Scream and 2023’s Scream VI). Recently, it was reported that Neve Campbell would return as Sidney in Scream 7, with original Scream writer Kevin Williamson directing the film. Now, it’s been revealed (per Carrot Top’s podcast) that Kennedy is also returning for Scream 7 to reprise his role as Randy.

Producers have confirmed that the new sequel, titled Scream 7: Afterlife, will not be retconning Randy’s death. In fact, it will be directly acknowledged, as Randy comes back as a ghost in the film. The return will happen after Sidney (Campbell) and Gale (Courteney Cox) resurrect Randy with a séance for some help after they’re targeted by a new Ghostface killer. However, the survivors will need to be careful because, as Randy explains in the sequel, this is no longer your ordinary slasher movie, and now “ghost movie rules” apply.

While this takes the franchise further into supernatural territory, it was seen by the production team as a necessary decision as the aim of Scream 7 is to bring back as many legacy stars as possible. This has led to additional talks with Drew Barrymore to make a special appearance as the ghost of Casey Becker, while Skeet Ulrich and Matthew Lillard are also in negotiations to return as the spirits of Billy and Stu, evening the odds in the ghostly battle.

If this story sounds too wild to be true, that’s because it is. It’s an April Fools’ Day story, and all that’s true about it is that Scream 7 is in the works, with Kevin Williamson directing and Neve Campbell officially set to return. Courteney Cox is also reportedly in talks to return as Gale, but — as far as we know — Legendary has no active plans to bring back Jamie Kennedy as Randy Meeks.

Happy April Fools’ Day!
