‘Interview With the Vampire’ Season 2, Episode 4, Recap & Review

Spoilers for ‘Interview With the Vampire’ Season 2, Episode 4

Ah, what tangled webs we weave.

With so many secrets piled upon secrets, it’s amazing these vampires have managed to find any happiness in their lives at all. With lifespans that can last centuries, the creatures crave the need for love, belonging, and intimacy as much as blood, and in some cases, maybe more. Interview With the Vampire season 2, episode 4, “I Want You More Than Anything In The World,“ has built up tension between so many characters that it is a tipping point that will likely change the course of their lives. 

Claudia has become a star, having finally hit the stage as a full-fledged member of the Theatre des Vampires. While audience numbers increase and more shows are added, things go downhill quickly. The coven doesn’t like the attention. Claudia is bored and begins to mail in her performances, annoying Armand. Louis hates the way Claudia is being portrayed. It is all vampire drama at its finest, with everyone on edge.

Meanwhile, the relationship/companionship between Louis and Armand begins to show signs of cracking. With the ghost of Lestat still haunting him, Louis finds himself questioning more, almost taking on some of Lestat’s persona. He is frustrated with Claudia, Armand, himself, and his photography. In a classic Louis self-destructive move, he turns to Lestat, a horrible idea at the best of times, as even the ghost of Lestat is more interested in Lestat than anything else.

It’s a gigantic power keg just waiting to be lit. Armand senses this and confides in Louis, laying out his origins so he can better understand him. (Louis asks him, “Who are you?”) A horrific story of being sold into slavery as a boy, the tale he tells has a deep impact on Louis and helps to strengthen a struggling bond between them.

At the same time, Claudia throws a fit when she realizes Armand has known about Lestat all along, telling Louis he is choosing yet another companion over her. Claudia finds solace in a friend, the dressmaker, who comes to her performance. However, Armand soon forbids her from seeing her again, driving home the part Claudia is to play in the coven, figuratively and quite literally. 

The secrets pile up like stacks upon stacks of firewood. The coven, especially Santiago, begins to grow suspicious. They don’t know what happened to Lestat but question the relationship between Louis and Armand. Santiago openly mocks and questions Louis about his accent and past while the company gathers at a restaurant for dinner. This leads Louis to go after Santiago, as Armand is forced to freeze time to calm everyone down.

Santiago wants to lead the coven. Louis tells Armand to let him, knowing it will eventually fail. But while Armand tries to keep the peace, Santiago and the coven members dig deeper. They find clues and evidence to light the match that will ignite this bottled-up tension and pack of lies. 

In the present day, Daniel manages to shock Armand and Louis when he asks if they are the only survivors from the fire at the Theatre. It seems Armand never gave him access to that info. It came from his mysterious friend from the Talamasca, so he had to do some quick thinking to redirect the line of questions. A fight emerges between Armand and Louis about a photograph that was not taken by Louis but is in the records. Daniel lets them fight in another room while he digs into a shocking discovery of a photo of him and Louis in 1973. There is an audio recording of that time with him, Louis, and Armand, and dialogue that makes Daniel’s blood run cold.

The Interview With the Vampire episode creates many rifts, exposes cracks in relationships, and reveals threats of lies being exposed. Some of which will change everything. All of the characters appear vulnerable yet capable of acts of cruelty, and none of them seem capable of being honest with each other and themselves.

“I Want You More Than Anything In The World” is a complete and utter mess, but it made for a great episode of television. It remains to be seen how it will play out, but in this immortal world of lovers and liars, no one is safe.
