The 2017 San Diego Comic Con seems to be one rife with nostalgia. Not only have we had panels revealing new movie versions of Rocko’s Modern Life and Hey Arnold!, as well as a rebooted Spawn, a possible Sandman comic reboot and so much more. Well, to add to the theme of ‘what is old is new again’, we now have it on good authority that an all new animated Ghostbusters movie is in the works and could be here as early as 2019.

The announcement came during the ‘Ghostbusters 101 – A Ghostbusters Panel of Biblical Proportions!’ panel, when the original 1984 film’s director Ivan Reitman took to the stage as a very special guest. It was believed that Reitman’s SDCC 17 appearance was simply as a spokesperson for the brand, giving some name power to the upcoming comic book launches, and to formerly announce the launch of the Ghost Corps subsidiary.

So, what did we learn about the animated movie? Well, why don’t we let the man speak for himself:

“I think we have wonderful plans, both for an animated feature that we’re deep in design on already and a really great story, that’s going to surprise everybody, I think, when it comes out. And we’re dealing with Ghost World quite a lot. We’re looking at the film from a ghost point-of-view, and the Ghostbusters from a ghost point-of-view. I think that would be something very interesting for you. And of course a new live-action film.”

When quizzed further, Reitman commented that this would not be a Real Ghostbusters movie, and as such Slimer would not be appearing as the group’s slimy, green sidekick.

OK, so let’s ignore the “new live-action film” comment, because that’s a whole other kettle of fish. But seriously, a new Ghostbusters movie told from the perspective of the ghosts? That’s a new perspective we can really get on board with, and will hopefully keep the trolls at bay, at least for a little while.

We’ll keep you up to date with any new Ghostbusters news, and don’t forget to keep checking back here for more news from SDCC 17.
