When The Conjuring was released in 2013, one of the most successful horror movie franchises of all time was born. The film has since spawned not only a direct sequel in The Conjuring 2, but several high-selling spinoff movies as well. Annabelle and its prequel Annabelle: Creation both did fantastic at the box office, as did the recently-released film, The Nun.
Certainly, with so much money to be made, we can expect more movies to be added to The Conjuring Universe. Sequels have already been announced for both Annabelle and The Nun, but many horror fans are still wondering when we’ll see The Conjuring 3. These side stories are interesting, but it will be nice to check back in with Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga’s on-screen interpretations of paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren.
Speaking to CinemaBlend, producer Peter Safran said that the third film is “coming along great,” with plans to begin shooting in 2019. Having produced all of the films thus far, Safran confirms that The Conjuring 3 is in development with a screenplay penned by David Leslie Johnson, with the film estimated to be released in 2020.
James Wan, who directed the first two films, will at least be returning for The Conjuring 3 as a producer. As the filmmaker has his hands full with Aquaman, however, he has previously stated he might not be available to direct the next Conjuring film. Time will tell what happens, but if Wan winds up helming the sequel himself, it will be the first time he’s completed a trilogy as a director.
The Crooked Man is another potential spinoff of The Conjuring 2 in the works. The script is reportedly being written by Mike Van Waes using a story treatment from Wan. As this film is still very early into development, there isn’t yet a timetable on an expected release date. Stay tuned for more info.
