Holy Smoke! After threats of spending several Wasted Years in litigation with Iron Maiden’s holding company, 3D Realms has decided their answer to the question “Can I Play With Madness?” would be to instead Run to the Hills and decided that they’d rather have their retro FPS released and Running Free on August 15th under a new name – Ion Fury.
Per an announcement on the publisher’s Discord:
“After careful consideration, we’ve decided to rename our first-person-shooter Ion Maiden to Ion Fury, said Mike Nielsen, CEO of 3D Realms. “A lot of thought went into this, but most importantly, it would be a disservice to our loyal fanbase and the fantastic developers to drag out a long lawsuit. The amazing gameplay, interactivity, and pure fun are what make Ion Fury a great game. Not the title.”
“Interactivity” is a keyword here. The roots of Ion Fury are based in that of other Build Engine games, like Shadow Warrior and Duke Nukem 3D, which revolutionized interactivity in the FPS genre with things like functional pool tables, vehicles, functional mirrors, and toilets you could smash and drink from. Judging by the trailer, the developers at Voidpoint are planning to live up to this legacy with even more destructible environments, a tank to pilot, and darts! Who doesn’t love darts?

In addition to the new name and bombastic release trailer, 3D Realms has also unveiled a new “big box” release full of digital goodies. According to their announcement, “This edition includes a Bowling Bomb-shaped USB Drive loaded with a DRM-Free version of the game and Soundtrack, a poster, a keycard based on the ones Shelly finds in-game, a making-of booklet, a Bowling Bomb sticker set, and of course Ion Fury, all for $59.99.”
