Many fans of the cult classic anthology horror movie Trick ‘r Treat are still holding out hope for a sequel, and director Michael Dougherty himself is among them. As the popularity for the 2009 horror flick only continues to grow with each passing year, Dougherty has come to expect getting asked about the potential sequel every Halloween season.
With the topic coming up once again, Dougherty is making it clear he’s still very much on board with following up the original with a second installment, though the decision is apparently not up to him. As the filmmaker explains, all he’s waiting for at this point is the call from Legendary, though he still admits it might be better to simply leave it be. From an interview with ComicBookMovie.com:
“Oh man, it’s that time of year! I feel like that’s become the new Halloween tradition: ask Mike about Trick ‘r Treat 2! [Laughs] Listen, I’m intrigued by the idea and it’s completely up to Legendary. It’s been a few years since we initially talked about it and there’s been a regime change since then. They still have the property and they love it and there’s still a long line of merchandise and a continuing line of comic books based on the film but the ball is in their court. The moment they say they’re interested and ready to go, we’ll see if the stars align. At the same time, I think there’s something to be said about not sequelising it. In a business that is obsessed with franchising and spinoffs and prequels and sequels, maybe there’s something to be said about just leaving it alone.”
For a lot of horror fans, Trick ‘r Treat has become an annual watch every October for the Halloween season. With this in mind, it’s understandable why Dougherty keeps getting asked about a follow-up, as these annual repeated viewings are leaving fans of the movie wanting more. What’s interesting about Trick ‘r Treat is that it’s an anthology horror movie, meaning a sequel wouldn’t necessarily have to expand upon any of the mythology of the original movie and instead deliver some all-new scary stories. However, it would definitely be awesome to see the bag-headed trick-or-treater Sam show back up, as the character has since become an iconic horror figure.
Of course, Dougherty has moved on to some very big things since his time helming Trick ‘r Treat. He wrote and directed this year’s blockbuster hit Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which grossed over $385 million at the box office. Still, it’s nice to know he still hasn’t forgotten about little Sam and Trick ‘r Treat.
