Collectibles powerhouse NECA has ensured that it will be all treats and no tricks this year. One of the most highly requested characters by horror fans and collectors (myself included) is finally making its way to their Ultimate line of figures. From director Michael Dougherty’s (Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Krampus) 2007 cult classic Trick ‘r Treat comes the lovable, mysterious, protector-of-all-things-Halloween supernatural spirit, Sam. In the anthology film, the burlap masked Sam (short for Samhain) weaves his way through all the stories, ultimately revealing his full abilities and unmasked, pumpkin-head visage in the movie’s final tale.
Although NECA has previously released a Sam figure as part of their “Cult Classics” line and has a clothed version set to be released later this year, this is the first time the diminutive monster has received the full “Ultimate” treatment. Known for their detail, articulation, and wide-range of accessories, NECA’s line of Ultimate figures has included some of horror’s biggest icons, such as multiple versions of Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Chucky, Leatherface, and Michael Myers (a version from his appearance in 1981’s Halloween II is set for release later this summer).
As is the case with all of their Ultimates, Sam comes loaded with all the requisite bells and whistles one would expect. For starters, the figure (which will stand approximately 5 inches tall) will feature four interchangeable heads (one with the burlap mask, one with the mask’s mouth open, one with the unmasked pumpkin head, and the last with battle damage to the pumpkin head). He will also come complete with an interchangeable hand, a severed hand, trick-or-treat sack, jack-o-lantern lollipop shiv, candy bar knife, and two Jack-O-Lanterns (one of which lights up). The figure will come, as all Ultimate figures do, in a collectible box with opening flap and window display.
Set for release in time for Halloween season this September, NECA’s Ultimate Sam is sure to be a very highly sought after and cherished figure. Much like the film’s delayed release, the wait will be long, but the payoff will be oh-so-sweet!
