After delivering us his take on Stephen King’s It, Andy Muschietti is set to reimagine the classic werewolf movie The Howling. Released in 1981, the Joe Dante film follows Dee Wallace as a journalist seeking therapy in a secluded mountain resort which she learns is inhabited by werewolves. With amazing special FX from Rob Bottin, many fans of the genre have a very fond nostalgia for the original installment of the horror series.

Clearly feeling that same level of appreciation for The Howling, Muschietti told horror fans in 2017 he would love to remake the film if he had the choice to remake any other horror movie he wanted to (per Deadline).  Apparently, Netflix was listening, as Muschietti recently told The Hashtag Show that he is remaking the movie for streaming service. As Muschietti also confirms he’ll be working on The Flash this year ahead of its 2022 release, the director says he won’t be getting to The Howling until after The Flash wraps.

As we all know, the work “remake” typically makes fans uneasy, especially when it comes to beloved cult classics like The Howling. Still, the trust Netflix has in Muschietti to pull it off is understandable, given the incredible success of his new vision of It. Many fans of the original mini-series with Tim Curry as Pennywise were very unhappy when the news was first reported that a film remake of It was in the works. Despite the concerns, the movie and its sequel were huge hits at the box office, and you can’t argue with results.

Given how busy Muschietti will be with The Flash for a while, we probably won’t see his version of The Howling anytime soon. For now, you can pay a quick revisit to the original by watching the film’s legendary werewolf transformation scene in the YouTube video below.
