Super7 Unveils ‘Mars Attacks’ ReAction Figures

Super7 has unveiled a new line of ReAction figures based on the original Mars Attacks trading cards. With artwork by Wally Wood and Norman Saunders, the original card series was released by Topps in 1962. One by one, each card told the story of a horrific alien invasion with invaders from Mars obliterating everyone and everything in their path.

Because people weren’t quite ready for that kind of thing in the early ’60s, the cards were pulled from stores almost just as quickly as they had arrived due to backlash over the artwork of graphic violence. Topps has since revisited the card series with re-releases and other merchandise in the years since, but the original sets from 1962 have become popular collectors’ items for fans.

Of course, Mars Attacks is probably best known for the movie adaptation by Tim Burton that was released in 1996. The film was filled with death, though it was not quite as graphic as the violence depicted on the original cards. In the years since its release, the Mars Attacks! movie has developed a strong cult following and has had plenty of merchandise of its own.

Three figures make up the line of Mars Attacks figures. One is inspired by the first card in the original trading card set, dubbed “The Invasion Begins,” coming with a 3.75″ alien and a deadly ray gun.  The “Destroying a Dog” figure also comes with a ray gun along with the dog that’s seen on Mars Attacks card #36. Based on card #19, the “Burning Flesh” figure is a victim of the aliens that comes with a melted assault rifle and a melting body.

These Mars Attacks ReAction figures are certainly pretty gruesome, but that was the whole point of the original trading card series.  Anyone fan of the cards, or even the Tim Burton movie, might fun them to be fun collectibles. The figures are available now and you can pick yours up at Super7.com.
