Since J.J. Abrams and Valve’s Gabe Newell first mentioned talks of a Portal movie in 2013, it has seemed the project would never come to light. However, it seems there’s still hope yet for fans to see the adaptation on the big screen. It has been confirmed that the film is still in development.
Recently during an unrelated press day, Abrams confirmed with IGN that Portal is still in the works. Abrams said, “We actually do have a script that’s being written for the Portal movie now at [Warner Bros.]. We’re really excited about the take and the pitch, so it feels like that thing’s finally on the rails.”

There are no further details on the script or story, but Abrams continues, “It’s got enormous potential for a lot of reasons, one of which is because of the limited narrative of the game, as ingeniously told as it is, the potential of it is so huge. It’s gonna be super fun.”
During the press day, Abrams was also asked about the Half-Life movie adaptation. The project was said to be in development in 2016 with the filmmaker’s production company Bad Robot. Abrams said, “the Half-Life thing, we’re not actively involved with at the moment.” Well, at least we still have Portal.
Developed and published by Valve in 2007, The Orange Box contained five video games: Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. Portal throws the player into a series of puzzles which must be solved by creating portals in order to advance. The star of the game is a sarcastic AI-programmed robot named GLaDOS who guides you through the levels. The game was a breakout hit, earning praise from gamers and critics alike, as well as winning awards. Portal 2 was released in 2011, adding more gameplay features to the familiar campaign.
