The future of It: Welcome to Derry, the prequel series to It and It: Chapter Two, remains unclear. It was recently reported that work has begun on a second season, though the series has yet to be officially renewed for Season 2. To clear the air, HBO boss Casey Bloys addressed the show’s future in a new chat with Deadline.
“Let me say, [the show is] not in limbo at all. Hardly. It was a huge success for us,” Bloys explained. “Andy and Barbara [Muschietti] are hard at work trying to come up with an idea for a story they’d want to tell for another season. I would happily do it.”
Bloys continued, “One of the challenges is, there’s not a book that you’re basing it on, so it’s invention. They want to make sure that they have a story they’re excited to tell. So it’s not limbo other than they need to land on something they’re excited by creatively. We’ll be there.”
It would seem that Season 2 is still in the midst of brainstorming behind the scenes. While it’s promising that Bloys promised that HBO is still very much behind the show, there’s still a good chance that Season 2 will fall through if the creative direction can’t be worked out. Notably, Andy Muschietti previously said that a potential second season would go back further in time to 1935, so making another season would entail introducing an all-new cast in a different time period while still finding good ways to link the story to Season 1 and the two feature films.
The first season of It: Welcome to Derry is streaming on HBO Max.
