The Housemaid star Sydney Sweeney is making her return to the horror genre with her latest movie casting. She’s set to star in The Caretaker, a new horror thriller from director David Bruckner.
Per THR, Bruckner has been tapped by Universal Pictures to helm The Caretaker with Sweeney on board to lead the cast. Bruckner is known in part for directing the 2022 Hellraiser remake, with his other genre work including the Rebecca Hall thriller Night House and the horror movie The Ritual. He also helmed episodes of Shudder’s Creepshow series.
The casting also brings Sweeney back to horror, where she originally kickstarted her career. She got her start with a role in 2010’s The Ward, the last feature film directed by Halloween helmer John Carpenter. Sweeney would later star in the religious horror film Immaculate, and more recently, she appeared in the hit thriller The Housemaid, which now has a sequel in the works. Sweeney also appeared in the horror comedy ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction and the genre film Along Came the Devil.
Bruckner and Sweeney’s upcoming film, The Caretaker, is based on a book by Marcus Kliewer, which will be released in bookstores on April 21. Its story is about a young woman, Macy Mullins, who responds to a job listing for three days of work in the Oregon wilderness. However, per the publisher, “what starts as a peculiar side gig soon becomes a waking nightmare. An incomprehensible evil may dwell on this property — and Macy Mullins might just be the only thing standing between it, and the rest of humanity.”

Bruckner will also write the script for the feature film adaptation, following prior drafts penned by Karl Gajdusek (The King’s Man) and Drew Crevello (WeCrashed).
The Caretaker does not yet have a release date.
