Although Rocko’s Modern Life made its first run on Nickelodeon 24 years ago, it is still a favorite for many in my generation. Surprisingly, the show got even better with age, especially since the the adult humor we (…I) missed back in the day finally makes sense (Chokey Chicken, anyone?). Now, it’s been announced that a one-hour TV special is coming next year!
Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling will premiere on Nickelodeon, with series creator Joe Murray coming back as writer and executive producer. Joining him will be the original cast members, including Carlos Alazraqui as Rocko/Spunky/Leon, Charlie Adler as Ed Bighead/Bev Bighead/Mr. Dupette/Grandpa Wolfe/Mrs. Fathead, Mr. Lawrence as Filburt Turtle, Tom Kenny as Heffer/Chuck/Really Really Big Man, Jill Talley as Nosey, Linda Wallem as Aunt Gretchen/Dr. Hutchinson, and Joe Murray as Ralph. Also joining the cast will be Steve Little as Cowboy and Cosmo Segurson as Pillow Salesman.
Nickelodeon had this to say about the show:
“Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling brings the characters back to Earth after being lost in outer space since 1996. Rocko has trouble accepting this 21st century modern life, while Heffer and Filburt embrace every aspect of new technology, social media, and the endless diversity of food trucks. Rocko believes that his nostalgia for the past can save him from the tortures of the modern world.”
It seems that nostalgia is a prevalent theme, because Nickelodeon isn’t just bringing back Rocko. The network will also feature an Invader Zim special, as well as a Hey Arnold! film titled Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie later this year. Just like with Rocko, both reboots will feature much of the original cast.
Even if it is a one-off TV special, I’ll surely take it! Are you excited to see Rocko, Heffer, Filburt, the Bigheads, and the rest of the gang in O-Town again?
