Production on Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen is scheduled to begin next month, and Hellboy creator, Mike Mignola, has begun sharing information about the film. Earlier today, Mignola confirmed to Newsarama that the B.P.R.D. (Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense) will indeed have a role to play in the film.
“The B.P.R.D figures into the movie. I don’t want to say who is and who isn’t in the movie. I think it’s fair to say, however, that the primary focus is Hellboy and not a B.P.R.D. team movie” – Mike Mignola
Characters such as Abe Sapien (Doug Jones), Elizabeth Sherman (Selma Blair), and Johann Kraus (Seth MacFarlane) from the B.P.R.D. were featured in Guillermo Del Toro‘s Hellboy films. In addition to those characters, there is also Doctor Kate Corrigan, Roger the homunculous, Panya the ageless mummy, and Captain Benjamin Daimio- the Were-Jaguar. As of now, we do not know which team members will make an appearance in the new film.
Mignola stated that despite having a great deal of input on the Del Toro films, and the way the B.P.R.D. characters were portrayed on-screen, he feels that the on-screen versions diverged greatly from his original vision for the characters. He also notes that even though he has very little say on the new Hellboy, he does feel that it will be much closer to his vision.
Filming for Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen is scheduled to begin in September. David Harbour is set to star as Hellboy. Ian McShane has been cast as Hellboy’s adoptive father, Professor Trevor Bruttenholm (AKA Professor Broom), and Milla Jovovich will play the villain of the film, The Blood Queen. The script was written by Mike Mignola, Andrew Cosby and Christopher Golden, and the film will be directed by Neil Marshall. It will be produced by Larry Gordon, Lloyd Levin, and Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Entertainment.
