Bruce Willis in Die Hard
20th Century Fox

Every Christmas season, social media gets flooded with popular Die Hard memes stating things like, It isn’t Christmas until I see Hans Gruber fall from Nakatomi Plaza” and “There are two types of people in this world, those who think Die Hard isn’t (or is) a Christmas movie and those who are wrong.” When it comes to that last statement, people get pretty adamant about their stance, and, as it turns out, Bruce Willis has an opinion.

The 1988 action flick follows Willis’ character, John McClane, an off-duty NYPD officer, taking on German terrorists in a skyscraper on Christmas Eve. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Willis briefly took the stage during the taping of The Comedy Central Roast of Bruce Willis over the weekend, declaring that “Die Hard is not a Christmas movie!” So, other than being one of the best action flicks to ever get made, what kind of film does Willis think Die Hard is? Well, “It’s a goddamn Bruce Willis movie!”

While it is, admittedly, a bit hard to argue with that logic, especially when the source is the star of the film, it will always be one of my favorite Christmas movies. Sorry, Bruce.

The roast was hosted by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who has co-starred with Willis in two films. The line-up of roasters includes Edward Norton, Cybill Shepherd, Martha Stewart, Lil Rel Howery, Demi Moore, Nikki Glaser, Jeff Ross, and even Dennis Rodman. (Spoiler: Rodman’s jokes about his good friend Kim Jong-un did not go over well and brought on some jeers. Particularly, “You keep making these bomb movies like Kim, but at least he is smart enough not to release his.” Sigh.)

If you would like to check out the fun for yourself, The Comedy Central Roast of Bruce Willis will air on July 29th at 10/9 CST on Comedy Central.

Which side do you fall on? Is Die Hard a beloved Christmas movie, or simply a Bruce Willis film? Let us know!
