For anyone who thought they’d never see Sir Patrick Stewart in that trademark Starfleet uniform ever again, this story is proof that you should just never say never.
From 1987 to 1994, Stewart starred on Star Trek: The Next Generation as the beloved captain of the Enterprise, Jean-Luc Picard. Arguably, and this is certainly a great debate with Trekkies, Picard’s run on the show would make him the most popular Star Trek captain of all time. After the show finished, Stewart would play Picard several more times in various feature films, concluding with 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis.
We’ve seen some interesting developments in the Star Trek universe since then. Multiple reboot films have been released in theaters, and the new show Discovery seems to be doing well. But perhaps the best news of all for Trekkies is today’s announcement that an all new Star Trek series is in the works – with Stewart once again reprising the role!
With Stewart as Picard, this new series will focus on the next chapter in the life of the former captain of the Enterprise. Plot details beyond that are scarce, as are any updates on a possible release date or official title. What we do know is that Stewart will be officially reprising the role, and the show will air on CBS All Access.
“During these past years, it has been humbling to hear many stories about how The Next Generation brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration and leadership,” Stewart explained when detailing why he chose to return to the role. He adds, “I feel I’m ready to return to him for the same reason — to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times.”
