‘Swamp Thing’ Casts Derek Mears as the Creature

Swamp Thing Review
DC Universe / Warner Bros Television Distribution

We’re obviously big fans of Swamp Thing here at Horror Geek Life, and it’s needless to say we couldn’t be more excited for the upcoming TV series. Produced by James Wan and set to debut on DC’s upcoming DC Universe streaming service, the show will begin filming this fall in North Carolina. With Len Wiseman directing the pilot episode using a script penned by Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman, the new show seems pretty promising.

Casting is now under way, and announcements are starting to hit the web. Gotham star Crystal Reed was recently announced to play the protagonist, Abby Arcane. As for who plays Dr. Alec Holland, that remains to be seen, however it has just been confirmed that a fan favorite horror star will be portraying the titular creature!

According to Splash Report, the one and only Derek Mears will be playing the “creature” version of Dr. Holland, a.k.a. the Swamp Thing. Major Friday the 13th fans don’t need to be reminded who Mears is, as he made a name for himself playing Jason Voorhees in the 2009 reboot. Although that film wasn’t without its criticisms, the portrayal of Jason by Mears is widely praised as one of the best aspects of the movie. Some of his other credits include Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesHatchet III, and Twin Peaks.

Synopsis: The series follows U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researcher Abby Arcane as she returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus. There, she bonds with scientist Alec Holland, only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets — both horrifying and wondrous, that could potentially bring the love of her life back to her.

DC Universe’s Swamp Thing series is set to premiere sometime in 2019.
