Sony’s plans to reboot the Ghostbusters franchise in 2016 didn’t exactly go over well. Directed by Paul Feig, the film introduced an entirely new cast to portray the titular team with Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy, and Kristen Wiig. Unfortunately, audiences weren’t very receptive, and abysmal reviews led to the film underperforming at the box office.
Of course, we can presume Sony would have moved forward with a sequel, had the reboot met their expectations. Feig was hoping for this as well, as the filmmaker already had some ideas on where to take things next. On a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Feig opened up about his Ghostbusters 2 plans, revealing where he’d have gone if the movie were made.
“I definitely wanted us to go to another country. Because when we were doing the press tour, the international press tour, every country the reporters would come with these drawings or artist renderings of that country’s ghosts. And every country has these really wild ghost stories and ghost characters that they scare kids with or keep people in line with. I really loved the idea of the Ghostbusters going to like Asia. Yeah, so there’s a lot of fun stuff what we could have done.”
In other words, Feig wanted to bring the Ghostbusters to an Asian country, fascinated by the foreign ghost stories he’d heard. It’s interesting to think about what kinds of ghosts we’d be seeing if the crew traveled abroad, and there are certainly lots of possibilities. But apparently this is just a thought from Feig, and nothing more than a pipe dream.
The 2016 film may not have been as amazing as the original two films, but the amount of vitriol the movie received was a bit excessive. While more Ghostbusters movies in the future somehow seem inevitable, it’s highly unlikely we’ll see Sony order a sequel directed by Feig. As for what will officially come next from the franchise, we’ll just have to wait and see.
