Some of the most intriguing horror games are the ones which have never been released. Let’s cry a little inside as we go through ten of the most promising horror video games that we’ll never, ever get to play.
8Obscure D (Xbox 360, PS3, Nintendo 3DS, PC)
Released in 2004 for the Xbox and PS2, the first Obscure is one of the more underappreciated horror games of the new millennium. Taking place in a high school at night, the survival horror title features five different playable teenagers to control. Unlike similar games, Obscure offered 2-player co-op, letting you and a friend both make your way through a scary school building filled with hideous creatures. When one of the characters died, the death was permanent, really helping to give the game the a horror movie feel.
An official sequel, Obscure II, would arrive a few years later for Windows, PS2, Wii, and Playstation Portable. Developer Hydravision Entertainment was then looking to expand the series even further with Obscure D, which would have taken place between the first and second games. It would have featured lead character Shannon Matthews using her newfound supernatural powers to keep her fellow students protected. The story would have bridged the gap between the games, explaining what happened to the characters from the first game whose fates were not revealed.
Before the game could be finished, Hydravision began to suffer from severe financial problems. This halted production on Obscure D, putting the future of the series into question. After securing additional funding from a new partner, production on the game was retooled, transforming what would have been a survival horror title into a beat-em-up action game. Fans of the first two games weren’t happy with the changes, and Obscure was dropped from its title when it was officially released as Final Exam. Considered a “spin-off” of the franchise, it’s safe to bet the fans would have much rather had a game like Obscure D.
