For the most part, wrestling fans are happy with simple wrestling games that just feature their favorite stars grappling in the ring. Still, some developers have tried adding wacky gimmicks to wrestling-themed titles, giving us these totally bizarre video games…
5The Simpsons Wrestling (2001)
The Simpsons and pro wrestling were both pretty hot properties when the crossover game The Simpsons Wrestling was released for the Sony PlayStation. Officially licensed, the game has many fan favorite characters from the animated series voiced by their actual voice actors. Yet, this is a game that both Simpsons fans and wrestling fans would prefer didn’t exist.
As the title implies, the game is about the characters from The Simpsons battling in various wrestling arenas in Springfield. Characters include those in the Simpson family of course (barring Maggie), with folks like Apu, Bumblebee Man, Krusty the Clown, and Groundskeeper Willie rounding out the roster. It might be animated (and poorly at that), but there’s something strange about having middle-aged men like Barney and Moe beating down an 8-year-old girl like Lisa Simpson.
Universally, the critical consensus for The Simpsons Wrestling is that it’s one of the worst video games of all time. Mashing The Simpsons with wrestling could have been acceptable if the game itself was actually fun. However, with terrible controls and tedious, never-ending matches, the game is literally painful to play. Not every game based on The Simpsons has been a winner, but this one is clearly the worst of the bunch and not even worth playing for its camp value.
