For the most part, wrestling fans are happy with simple wrestling games that just feature their favorite stars grappling in the ring. Still, some developers have tried adding wacky gimmicks to wrestling-themed titles, giving us these totally bizarre video games…
4WWE Crush Hour (2003)
THQ may not have found success by taking wrestlers outside of the ring with WWF Betrayal, but they went for the same strategy two years later for WWE Crush Hour. This time, instead of a beat ’em up, THQ took inspiration from Twisted Metal to put the wrestlers into a car combat game. If you think that sounds crazy already, you’re absolutely right.
In this game’s storyline, WWE chairman Vince McMahon has conquered television, taking control of every network and program. He then has the power to feature his WWE Superstars in any TV show or commercial he chooses. McMahon creates a new program called Crush Hour, putting wrestlers in a demolition derby-style show with their own customized cars outfitted with unique weapons.
To their credit, THQ knew this would be a budget title, pricing it as such. It’s humorous in many ways, from its bizarre concept to the commentary provided by Jim Ross. However, the novelty wears off before long, as the gameplay just doesn’t hold up to similar vehicular combat titles.
