David Gordon Green’s Halloween is now available on home video, and with it comes an assortment of special features. A total of eight deleted scenes are included in the release, which show some of the ideas Green had for the film which didn’t make it into the theatrical version. Some of the cut scenes feel like they could have remained in the movie without much consequence, and were likely cut for pacing. For example, the scene that reveals what happened to Allyson’s boyfriend should satisfy the curiosity of viewers wondering why the character vanished halfway through the movie.
While most of the scenes are entertaining to watch, there’s one which was without a doubt best left on the cutting room floor. Completely cringe-inducing, the goal of the scene seems to be for comic relief, but it’s completely absurd. It’s so bizarre that it may have taken viewers out of the moment during a pivotal time in the story. Perhaps as a way to foreshadow just how strange Dr. Sartain really is, the cut scene in question features a rather awkward and unnecessary moment between the doctor and the policeman escorting him.

In the scene, Sartain and Officer Hawkins are patrolling the streets of Haddonfield in a police car, looking for Michael Myers. This would be taking place in the moments before the two find Michael, leading to Sartain murdering Hawkins. First, from out of nowhere, Sartain asks Hawkins if he enjoys wearing women’s underwear, leaving the cop speechless in response. Sartain then starts openly picking his nose in the car, much to the policeman’s disgust. When Hawkins scolds the secretly-evil doctor for digging for a winner in the passenger seat, Sartain responds that he’s actually scratching his brain through his nose. “What kind of a doctor are you, anyway?” Hawkins asks, bewildered.
This must be some of Danny McBride’s work on the screenplay coming through. While such a scene might work in a stoner comedy, it feels incredibly out-of-place in a Halloween film. Fortunately, Green thought better of including the scene in the final product, wisely choosing to chop it out. Still, one has to wonder how it came as close as it did to actually appearing in the movie.
You can watch this and other deleted scenes on the 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD release of Halloween, which is now available in stores.
