Update: Check out the NEW TEASER here!

Just a couple of months after we reported that Ghostbusters 3 is in the works, we are now finding out that the next Ghostbusters film will be directed by Jason Reitman. In the news story we previously published, Dan Aykroyd was quoted as saying that Ghostbusters 3 is “being written right now.” It is not exactly clear if these two projects are one in the same or not.

Jason Reitman is the son of Ivan Reitman, the director on the first two Ghostbuster films. Ivan Reitman will act as producer on this third film and told EW:

“It will be a passing of the torch both inside and out. It was a decision he had to come to himself. He worked really hard to be independent and developed a wonderful career on his own. So I was quite surprised when he came to me with Gil and said, ‘I know I’ve been saying for 10 years I’m the last person who should make a Ghostbusters movie, but…I have this idea.’ Literally, I was crying by the end of it, it was so emotional and funny.”

The new film will be set in the same universe as the 1984 film, but there is no word on whether or not any of the original cast will be involved. Since it follows in the footsteps of the first movie, we know that Ghostbusters 3 will not be connected to the 2016 all-female reboot from director Paul Feig in any way.

Shooting will start sometime this spring, with a release planned from Sony Pictures the summer of 2020.
