Whether you still have cable or not, most of us have a real Netflix addiction. On top of binge-worthy shows and a decent catalogue of films, the streaming service has been knocking it out of the park with their original content. The company, which boasts 137 million total subscribers, knows that we simply struggle to live without it, and will make us dig a bit deeper in our pockets to keep it.

The Basic plan was $8 and will go up to $9 while their most popular plan, HD Standard, is going from $11 to $13, and the 4K Premium plan will go from $14 to $16. While Netflix has raised their fees in the past, this is the biggest price hike we have seen. The pricing changes will be effective immediately for all new subscribers and phased in for existing subscribers over the next few months.
So, why the hike now? The company said in a statement to the Associated Press: “We change pricing from time to time as we continue investing in great entertainment and improving the overall Netflix experience.” While that sounds like typical corporate jargon, and it is, it also sounds like they are going to focus on spending even more for the Netflix Originals. It is more important now than ever to stay on top of bringing fresh and original content, as the company is facing quite a bit of competition from other streaming sources, with even more in the works.

While we don’t really look forward to spending more money (who does?), we can’t argue that the Netlflix Original series and films haven’t been crazy impressive. Just some of the highlights have been Bird Box, Stranger Things, Mindhunter, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, The Haunting of Hill House, Black Mirror, and several Marvel shows.
While user backlash is almost guaranteed, it probably won’t be enough for most of us to turn off the service permanently. Let’s just hope we continue seeing that money put to good use.
