Nickelodeon

This fall, the ’90s Nickelodeon horror anthology series Are You Afraid of the Dark? is getting the big screen treatment with a feature film adaptation. To coincide with the release of the movie, Nickelodeon is reviving the classic show as well as an all new miniseries. An official release date was not yet given, but it will likely arrive as close as possible to the movie’s premiere. The film opens in theaters everywhere on Oct. 4, 2019.

The premise of the series saw a group of youths dubbed the Midnight Society telling each other scary stories around a campfire. Every episode, a different member of the group well tell a separate, unrelated story. Despite airing on Nickelodeon, some of the stories told were rather scary – at least for ’90s kids. One could wager Zeebo the Clown is responsible for countless cases of lifelong coulrophobia for those who saw the show at a young age.

Now, the series gets it to do it all over again nearly 20 years past the show’s final episode. It’s not clear who all will be involved in the sew series, but the revival will carry the same basic premise. A new Midnight Society will be gathering around to tell different stories, much in the same anthology format as the show’s first run. Hopefully, this revival will be more successful than when Nickelodeon first attempted to revive it in 1999. The show only ran for two more seasons before the network pulled the plug in 2000.

The Are You Afraid of the Dark? movie is directed by D.J. Caruso, using a screenplay from Gary Dauberman. It will be hitting the big screen on Oct. 4, 2019.
