Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later may no longer exist in the current Halloween continuity, but many franchise fans still remember the flick fondly. Let’s revisit the 1998 slasher sequel with these ten killer facts about the film!
9Michael Myers wears multiple masks throughout the movie
One of the biggest issues behind the scenes, when it came to making Halloween H20, was dealing with Michael’s mask. Because things were so complicated with the use of the mask in the film, the end result is that the appearance of the mask changes throughout the movie. Eagle-eyed viewers will definitely notice some changes if they’re paying close attention to the boogeyman’s face.
Here’s how this mask debacle came about. As the story goes, John Carl Buechler had designed the original mask to look like the same one from Halloween 6. Unhappy with the way it looked, producers hired Greg Nicotero to create a new mask that served as a “close approximation” to the others, while having its own unique design. After shooting many scenes using this new mask, producers changed course again and had a third mask made to use for Michael. Buechler and Nicotero spoke about the fiasco in the documentary Halloween: 25 Years of Terror.
By this point, many scenes from the film had already been shot using Nicotero’s mask. This meant many scenes had to be reshot using the new mask, although there are still brief moments in the film where the other masks can be seen. At one point, an awkward CGI mask is superimposed over the old mask in the scene when Michael confronts Charlie in the kitchen. This means there are four total masks worn by Michael in the film, although they’re meant to be the same one.
