Director Jason Reitman is continuing the story of the original Ghostbusters movies in an all-new sequel, and franchise star Sigourney Weaver is set to reprise the role of Dana Barrett. The actress recently confirmed the casting herself, eager to return to the classic franchise. “It’s going to be crazy working with the guys again!” Weaver told Parade. Her wording suggests she’ll be reuniting with at least some of the other original cast members, although nobody else has been confirmed at this time.

Full details on the plot haven’t yet been revealed, but the story will follow new protagonists in the lead roles. Still, there’s room for Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson to appear as Peter, Ray, and Winston in at least a cameo capacity. All three actors have publicly suggested they’re open to appearing in the movie, but had yet to be approached by producers. Egon’s original actor, Harold Ramis, sadly passed away in 2014.

More cast members could be announced over the weekend at Ghostbusters Fan Fest. Weaver’s involvement does lead one to wonder who else from the original films could be making a return. Louis Tully, the character originally played by Rick Moranis, is another name that comes to mind. Moranis has since all but retired from acting, but he did agree to appear as his Spaceballs character for a special episode of The Goldbergs. If he’s open to reprising some of his other classic roles, then there’s a chance we could see him in Ghostbusters 3 as well.

Aside from Weaver, other confirmed names for the cast include Finn Wolfhard as a lead character and new recruit into the Ghostbusters team. Mckenna Grace and Carrie Coon have also been cast as his sister and mother, respectively. More information about the cast will reportedly be here very soon. Ghostbusters 3 is expected to be released in theaters on July 10, 2020.
