X-Men: The Animated Series ended its run on television over two decades ago, yet it remains one of the most popular Marvel adaptations ever. The superheroes that make up the X-Men have since found success in a series of live-action movies, but ’90s kids still have fond memories of the animated program. Perhaps soon enough, if Disney is interested, we could be seeing the classic cartoon making a comeback.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the creative team behind X-Men: The Animated Series is planning to pitch Disney – the current rights-holder – a small screen continuation of the show. “The one thing we’d like to do more than anything else is to continue where we left off,” says X-Men artist Larry Houston. While the advent of high-definition TV will allow for finer details, hopefully the potential revival would carry over the same overall art design.
Also reported is that a variety of cast members from the series will be reuniting this fall. An X-Men: The Animated Series reunion is set for Los Angeles Comic Con on October 12, featuring a group of actors not seen together since wrapping their run on the cartoon. Set to appear are Cal Dodd (Wolverine), Lenore Zann (Rogue), Chris Potter (Gambit), George Buza (Beast), and Chris Britton (Mr. Sinister). That’s going to be one amazing panel for any hardcore fan of the show to see.
The X-Men cartoon originally premiered on Fox Kids as a Saturday morning cartoon in 1992. It became a hit and wound up running for five seasons, ultimately coming to an end in 1997. The first X-Men movie would come just a few years later in the year 2000, and the primary focus for the superhero team from Marvel was for a long line of films that continues to this very day with Dark Phoenix now in theaters.
With Marvel now under Disney’s umbrella coupled with the company seeking new content for the Disney+ streaming service, it’s certainly possible for a cartoon revival to actually happen. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
