Kirk Hammett Exhibit ‘It’s Alive!’ Opens at the ROM in July

Universal Studios

It’s no secret that Metallica guitarist, Kirk Hammett, is a huge horror geek. He’s been showing off his affinity for the genre for the last couple decades with his custom made guitars featuring artworks of various classic monsters. Now he’s bringing that love to Toronto. On July 13th, Hammett’s exhibit ‘It’s Alive!’ will premiere at the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum) featuring one of the best collections of horror memorabilia in the world.

Hammett has been collecting all things horror for over three decades, and the exhibit will be curated by Hammett himself with pieces directly from his own collection. Film posters, props, costumes, and artwork will all be on display. In an interview a couple of years ago with WBUR, Hammett confessed that he discovered The Day of the Triffids at the age of 5, and has been obsessed ever since.

The exhibit features many extremely rare vintage cinema posters, one of which is the only surviving and intact original Frankenstein print from 1931! But that’s not his favorite piece. In an interview with Toronto radio personality, Alan Cross, Hammett revealed that his favorite piece in the whole collection is his The Mummy poster, with the artwork being on one of his guitars.

“When I look at it I just get lost in the colours and composition of it. The lushness, too. I just love it. I get lost in this kind of stuff. My mind just dives in totally and then I’m somewhere else. There’s an amazing effect that this stuff has on me.”

Funko fans especially will want to check out the exhibit because starting on July 13th, two exclusive Kirk Hammett/Universal Monsters Funko Pop mash-ups will be available, exclusive to the exhibit. One is Kirk as Frankenstein’s Monster, and the other (my favorite) is Kirk as the Creature from the Black Lagoon. These awesome figures are limited to 1008 per style, so they’ll go fast.

The ‘It’s Alive! Classic Horror and Sci-Fi Art’ exhibit opens in Toronto at the ROM on July 13th, 2019 and will run until January 5th, 2020. Will you be checking out the exhibit? Let us know. Tickets are available here
