‘The Batman’ Is Eyeing Colin Farrell as The Penguin

Colin Farrell in Total Recall | Columbia Pictures

Matt Reeves’ upcoming superhero movie The Batman is finalizing the rest of its cast, as Colin Farrell is reportedly in talks to play the iconic villain Oswald Cobblepot. Further details aren’t clear, but according to Deadline, Farrell is in the midst of negotiations for the role, and there seems to be a good chance he’ll be cast. If the deal is finalized, Farrell will be joining Paul Dano as The Riddler and Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman to round out the trio of Batman villains.

Also known as Penguin, Oswald has been previously portrayed in other live-action Batman adaptations. Back in the ’60s TV series with Adam West, the role was played by Burgess Meredith. More recently, the character made his way back to television on the prequel series Gotham with Robin Lord Taylor in the role. On the big screen, Danny DeVito famously portrayed a more bizarre version of the character in the Tim Burton sequel Batman Returns. All three of these actors have been widely praised for their portrayals of Penguin, setting a high bar for Farrell or any actor to step into the role next.

Of course, the hero of The Batman has been cast as well, as Robert Pattinson will portray Bruce Wayne in the movie. Also confirmed to appear in the anticipated movie is Westworld star Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon.  Details on its exact plot aren’t clear, but it appears the story will be set at a time when many of the villains from Batman’s Rogues Gallery have already been introduced and are unleashing their unique methods of crime in the city of Gotham. It’s not clear if a new version of the Joker will appear, but as the movie won’t be connected to the DCEU or Joker, the character wouldn’t be the Jared Leto or Joaquin Phoenix versions of the Clown Prince of Crime, if he does in fact show up.

The Batman will premiere in theaters on June 25, 2021.
