Randy Pitchford, co-founder of Gearbox Software, today announced that Eli Roth is confirmed to direct the upcoming Borderlands movie adaptation. He broke this news via his Twitter, along with an epic title card from concept artist Max Davenport:

The film, which has been in the works since 2015, will finally begin production this year with Lionsgate and producers Avi Arad and Ari Arad via Arad Productions, and Erik Feig via Picturestart. Craig Mazin, writer and producer of HBO’s hit miniseries Chernobyl, has worked on the current script.

Roth’s work is very well-known to horror fans as the director of Cabin Fever (2002), Hostel (2005), The Green Inferno (2013), and Knock Knock (2015) starring Keanu Reeves. Although this is the first time Roth has taken on a video game adaptation, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group President Nathan Kahane has total faith, telling Deadline: “With Eli’s vision and Craig’s screenplay, we believe we have cracked the code on bringing the anarchic world of Borderlands to the big screen in a big way that will be a fresh, compelling and cinematic event for moviegoers and fans of the game.”

Developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games, the first Borderlands title was released in 2009. The game is a futuristic open world FPS RPG that follows four Vault Hunters who travel to the planet Pandora in search of alien technology. They must fight an army for their coveted stash while also battling the wildlife and Pandora’s unfriendly inhabitants. The game has spawned three sequels over the years- Borderlands 2 in 2012, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel in 2014, and Borderlands 3 just last year.
